Reflection: Michael-Christopher
"Depending on where you live, being young, black and LGBT could be downright dangerous. Our children have been taunted, chased and beaten for decades, and in recent years here in the United States, there have been more murders of black gay youth than I care to mention. Although none have captured national attention as Matthew Shepard, we are here to tell you that the lives of Sakia Gunn, Rashawn Brazell, Jason Mattison and all the other black LGBT youth, living or not, matter. And no child should be moved to end their life because they've been labeled a "fag" or 'dyke".
Despite what society might say, biological attraction is not a choice, disease or perversion, especially if it is acted upon with pride and dignity and love."
Michael-Christopher is an author and Editor-In-Chief of SWERV Magazine; a new national lifestyle periodical for the African-American LGBT community.
